We were delighted to have welcomed members of our village community to the farm for a tour and tasting session this month. It was so rewarding to finally be making a connection with our wider community members and try to explain in depth what we're up to and how we'd like to involve them in our mission over here at "The Burnt Hill Herb Co."
Over 25 people attended in total, we started the tours with a little background about Jon and the reasons for setting up "The Burnt Hill Herb Co." and then proceeded to tour the facilities, passing the smokehouse and processing building, continuing on to the plant polytunnels where our delicious edible crops are growing. We talked about the various "Soil-free" growing methods we are employing to grow much faster and cleaner tasting produce, all without insecticides or pesticides.
We then moved on to the Fish Tunnel where our visitors witnessed the fish swimming about and eating up their high quality, uk-produced organic feed and heard lots more info about our innovative farming methods and welfare standards, there were plenty of questions being asked and everyone seemed to be engaged and committed to the cause of the company and the brand.
At the end of the session we headed back into the plant polytunnel to taste some of our fantastic cold smoked trout canapé's, featuring savoury biscuits from our friends at "Lottie Shaws Bakery" in Brighouse and Cream Cheese from "Longley Farm" in Holmfirth and topped off with our own micro herbs.
We talked some more while tasting, hearing more about our circular business model ethics and about recent changes in consumer attitudes towards a higher emphasis to buy Local, in-season and fresh produce from Yorkshire. We also talked about our CSA (community supported agriculture) initiative "Burnt Hill Tomato Club" which we'll be introducing this summer.
We were pleased to also welcome Rebecca from "Yorkshire Pasture Poultry" in Holmfirth, who introduced her company and explained in great detail about her regenerative and innovative farming methods and CSA business model to our guests.
We look forward to meeting more of our community on the farm for our future tasting events and tours and of course for locals to drop by and collect their locally produced Cold Smoked Trout and fresh produce.
Many thanks To Jane & Frances from the "Farnley Tyas Community Group" for organising the tour groups and for all the good work that the FTCG do in the community.
